3 Mins read

Diabetes is a widespread disease and we all have heard about it. It is a complicated long term disease which invites many other diseases and sometimes it could be fatal. Hence no one wants to take it lightly. People nowadays are more aware and they love to share information about it like its prevention, its initial symptoms,&its homemade remedies, etc. but many times myths are also been circulated along with. We need to stay away from such myths when we deal with such a silent killer. But before jumping to its myths and facts, let’s first know a little about diabetes.

It is a long term disease in which blood glucose or blood sugar level in our body increases because the required amount of glucose in our body couldn’t be circulated. Blood glucose comes from our meals and also it is the main source of energy for our body. These glucose molecules are not consumed by various cells in our body directly but first converted into energy with the help of insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas in our body. When these insulin are not produced in sufficient quantity or our body couldn’t use it, then cells couldn’t get sufficient glucose. Hence, this excess glucose gets accumulated in our body with time which leads to high blood glucose or blood sugar level i.e. diabetes.

There are many types of diabetes, but below three are more prevalent:

  • Type 1 diabetes: It is more common in children.
  • Type 2 diabetes: It is the most prevailing form of diabetes.
  • Gestational diabetes: It can be seen during pregnancy.

Now, let’s discuss some common myths and facts:

The most common myth people say is that diabetes is hereditary. Means, if anyone in my family has diabetes then I would get for sure.

If diabetes is in your family then there is a high chance that you might also get type 1 & 2 diabetes but, it can be avoided. Further, if you do not have any diabetic member in your family then also there is a chance you get type 2 diabetes. Diabetes can be avoided by adopting a healthy lifestyle. Few are mentioned below:

You will know when you have diabetes through its symptoms.

Well, it’s not always true. Especially in the case of type 2 diabetes. Many times it shows very less or no symptoms in its initial stage. Some of the common symptoms of both types of diabetes are:

  • Often feeling thirsty
  • Often urgency of urination
  • Always feeling tired.
  • Body pain
  • Numbness or pain in limbs (seen in type 2 diabetes)
  • Weight loss (seen in type 1 diabetes)
  • Fatigued
  • Always feeling hungry even with a full stomach.

Wounds take time to heal.

Don’t worry! Your gestation diabetes will get cured after delivery.

This must not be ignored. As in the future, both the mother and the baby could get type 2 diabetes. So do consult with your doctor.

Borderline diabetes or pre-diabetes is a myth.

When the sugar levels of the blood are higher than the normal range but are not in the diabetic range, this condition is called pre-diabetes and borderline diabetes. It takes around 10 years for a person to develop from pre-diabetic to diabetic.

One cannot eat sugar at all if he/she is diabetic.

This is one of the oldest myths. Intake of sugar quantity depends upon the person’s current blood sugar level and his/her medication. So, consult your doctor before pulling out your sugar tooth.

You can stop your medication once your blood sugar levels go back to normal range.

One must not forget that diabetes is a progressive disease. Under long medication period, only you can bring your sugar levels to normal. Regular checkup and testing must be done, and before stopping the medications always consult the doctors.

Diabetic people suffer from sexual disorders.

Though a high blood sugar levels person might experience erectile dysfunction, vaginal dryness, etc. but it is not implemented to all diabetics. There is no hard and fast rule. Some might be having some might not.

No doubt diabetes is a silent killer. But we need to focus on the right information and facts, and then only we can fight against it in the right way.
